Mercer Mettl alternative: the version that admits what Mettl is good at.
Mettl will not tell you what it costs until you get on a call. That single fact sends more people to this search than any missing feature. Here is who should switch anyway, who should not, and seven options with real prices where a real price exists.

Stay put if you run campus drives, need live proctoring on an exam that matters, or need psychometric reports a compliance team will accept. Nothing below matches that.
Start looking if you are a small team who cannot get a number without a sales call, or you are buying a year of credits to screen a handful of engineers.
What Mercer Mettl is genuinely good at
This comes first because most pages on this query skip it, and that is why most of them are not worth reading. Mettl started in Gurgaon in 2009 and Mercer bought it in 2018. It is better than this website at almost everything except telling you the price.
Proctoring depth. Automated proctoring with audio and video analytics, human proctoring, a locked-down secure browser, and proctoring sold as a managed service. Reviewers name the live feed as the standout feature of the whole platform. For certification exams or campus tests where a real result is at stake, this is not an extra, it is the product.
Breadth and scale. Cognitive, behavioural, technical, coding and leadership assessment in one place, with papers generated dynamically so two candidates do not sit the same one. Bulk uploads and campus drives are a solved problem there. The partners page names sixteen applicant tracking systems including Greenhouse, Lever, iCIMS and Darwinbox. Info-Tech’s data has 97 percent of surveyed customers intending to renew, which you do not get from a product people resent.
Why people go looking for Mercer Mettl alternatives
All of this comes from pages we opened on 2 August 2026: Capterra, GetApp, Software Advice and SoftwareReviews. G2, TrustRadius, Gartner Peer Insights and Reddit refused access.
You cannot find out what it costs without a sales call
The pricing page carries no number of any kind. The headline is “Customised plan as per your organisation”, the button says “Get quote now!”, and the page ends with a phone number. The signup page books a demo rather than starting a trial.

Prepaid credits expired, and the fix was to buy far more
One reviewer described credits expiring without warning, then having to commit to roughly five times their annual usage to get working again. You buy a block up front, and the block has a clock on it that is not your hiring cycle.

Two reviewers asked for pricing based on usage instead of duration. If your hiring is lumpy, an annual agreement charges the same in the quarter you hire nobody.

The account contact keeps changing, and support follows it
A 2023 reviewer said their account representative changed constantly. Another made the point that matters more: the vendor sells the platform but will not advise which assessment to use. Info-Tech rates its vendor support 79 out of 100, below average for the category.

Proctoring raises flags that turn out to be nothing
A reviewer described the system flagging an extra person in the room or a phone when neither was there. Worth understanding rather than using as a stick: false flags are the cost of having proctoring at all.

Limited room to write your own questions
Reviewers reported little option to write their own questions, a bank that felt shallow for specialised roles, and unfriendly exam management screens.

One caution. A large share of Capterra’s reviews for this product cluster inside a few days in June 2024, the pattern a vendor review drive leaves. The criticism above is dated and real, but the wall of praise from that same week deserves equal scepticism.

The options in more detail
Adaface
Singapore-registered, Indian founders, Bengaluru office. The test runs as a chat with a bot and reviewers say candidates do not mind it. It prints its whole price list. The catch is the shape: annual billing, dollars only, and credits expiring a year after purchase.
Equip
The strongest answer here for most Indian teams, and we would rather say so plainly than bury it. ₹95 per candidate per test on the page, no subscription, credits that never expire, and a free applicant tracking module. It also runs coding assessments and AI interviews that we do not.
iMocha
The closest like-for-like on breadth: technical and non-technical assessment at scale, plus skills mapping for people already on the payroll. It shares Mettl’s main flaw. The pricing page asks you to contact them, and the seven day trial gives three test attempts.
TestGorilla
Worth a look if you needed range across non-technical roles: around 350 tests spanning cognitive ability, personality, situational judgment and role skills. The free plan is why it is here. Paid is less friendly: Core is $142 a month billed as $1,704 for the year, and credits expire at renewal.
TestDome
The simplest money on this page. Buy a pack of invites and use them whenever: five for $100, a hundred for $1,000, down to $7 each at six hundred, and their FAQ says packs never expire. Far narrower than Mettl, but the annual credits conversation stops happening.
Journey Uncommon
Ours, and the smallest thing here. One job: a first knowledge screen on programming languages, multiple choice, seventeen languages mixable in one test. The next section lists the gaps.
Xobin
An Indian platform covering skills tests, video interviews and psychometrics, so a closer shape to Mettl than most of this list. The trial is fourteen days with full access to your chosen plan. After that you are back where you started: the pricing page prints no figures.
Where Journey Uncommon fits, and where it does not
We are sixth on that table and that is the right place. This is an early product with one narrow job.
What is different. You can read the questions before you pay us anything. Our practice bank sits on public URLs with worked explanations and the exact grading rubric. Every other vendor here, Mettl included, asks you to buy a score from a bank you cannot see. The tests candidates sit come from a separate sealed set, never published, drawn differently per person. Pricing is in rupees, monthly, cancel whenever.
What we do not do. Multiple choice only, so no coding sandbox and no AI-graded written answers. No applicant tracking integrations. No custom branding. Rupee card billing only. One test at a time in the dashboard today. And no proctoring, not because it is on a backlog but because we will not build it: no webcam, no screen recording, no browser lockdown, no identity matching, no cheating score. We record an answer timeline and how often the page lost focus, and show those numbers without a verdict.
So: if your Mettl contract is renewing and you mostly use it to check whether backend applicants know their language, we are a cheap way to do that. If you use any of the other things Mettl does, do not switch to us.

How much does Mercer Mettl actually cost?
There is no published answer. We opened mettl.com/pricing on 2 August 2026 and it contains no figure of any kind, and four software directories list the price as contact vendor. Any rupee or dollar figure you find for Mettl on a comparison blog is somebody's guess or somebody's old quote.
Is there a free version or a free trial of Mercer Mettl?
Two directories list a free trial, but the signup page routes to a demo booking rather than an account you can create, and we found no self-serve way in on 2 August 2026. If you need a candidate tested this week without a sales call: TestGorilla's free plan gives ten credits a month, and our free tier creates five tests a month with unlimited candidates.
Do any of these alternatives do live human proctoring?
Not the way Mettl does. It publishes automated and human proctoring, a secure browser, and proctoring sold as a managed service, and that is what its reviewers praise most. Several tools here do webcam snapshots and tab-switch tracking. Journey Uncommon does none of it and never will. If a proctored exam is why you bought Mettl, stay.
Why is Equip listed above Journey Uncommon here?
Because for most teams leaving Mettl, Equip is the better answer. It bills ₹95 per candidate per test, needs no subscription, never expires credits, and runs coding assessments and AI interviews that we do not. Our pitch is narrower: you can read the questions and rubric before spending anything, and a flat monthly fee wins above a few dozen candidates a month.
The Capterra reviews for Mettl look very positive. Why?
The score is genuinely good, 4.3 out of 5 across 42 reviews. Worth knowing: a large share are dated within days of each other in June 2024, which normally means a review drive. That does not make them false, but a burst of five star reviews from one week is not evidence of much.
Before you move
Work out which single Mettl feature you would actually miss. If it is proctoring or psychometrics, this page has argued for staying. If it is checking whether people know Java, you are paying enterprise money for a knowledge screen.
